Junior driving experiences prove popular amid growing DVSA backlog

Latest research shows that an increasing number of young Brits are bracing themselves for the huge driving test backlog by learning to drive on race circuits and airfields.

Findings from DrivingExperience.com has revealed that bookings for young driver experiences, which take place in a controlled environment away from open roads, are the provider’s most popular packages so far this year.

Indeed, collectively, DrivingExperience.com’s 30 Minute and 60 Minute Young Driver Experience sessions account for over a third (35 per cent) of the provider’s voucher sales in 2022 so far.

This comes against the backdrop of driving test chaos, with a staggering 530,000 learners waiting for a driving test as of May this year, up from 496,124 last year. This, DrivingExperience.com claims, is driving the popularity of its junior packages, as more and more youngsters look to get a head start of their learning as they anticipate painful delays in booking a driving test.

Junior Driving Experiences are available to youngsters aged 10-17 years old, meaning a driving licence is not needed. The packages give an actual insight into what skills are required to drive a car. All cars are fitted with dual controls and drivers learn with a qualified instructor.

Alex MacGregor at DrivingExperience.com, commented: “At DrivingExperience.com, we are known for offering high-octane packages in iconic supercar models such as Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins

However, this year, the huge driving test backlog has meant that our Junior Driving Experiences have proved even more popular than our perhaps more glamorous packages, as proactive youngsters look to hone their skills early, in anticipation of eventually facing the dreaded queue to secure an elusive driving test.”

As well as trying to give themselves the best possible chance of passing their test, DrivingExperience.com also claims that in undertaking a junior driving experience, young people are proactively taking steps to become safer and more responsible drivers, as they hone their skills, gain experience and develop safer driving habits.

According to latest Department for Transport (DfT) figures, learner or inexperienced drivers were a contributory factor in in 2,168 car accidents in 2021. Furthermore, nervous, uncertain, or panicked drivers were responsible for 823 collisions.*

Alex concluded: “Undertaking a driving experience in a controlled environment gives youngsters the chance to grasp the basics of driving a car and helps their confidence ahead of taking their test, hopefully reducing any nerves or uncertainty when they take to public roads.”
